Vice-Rector for Research & Impact (University of Antwerp)
Professor · Scientific Director (imec–IDLab)

I am a Full Professor and Vice-Rector for Research and Impact at the University of Antwerp. I teach courses on wireless communication systems and the Internet of Things. Additionally, I am the Scientific Director of the IDLab research group, an imec-UAntwerp group of approximately 110 members conducting research on AI and connectivity. My own research focuses on ultra-low-power sensor communication, embedded systems, sensor processing, localization, and satellite communication. I succesfully supervised 10 PhD students in this topics and currently 10 PhD students are still under my supervison. I have co-authored 147 publications (of which 105 are indexed in WoS) and 5 patents.

I have been reviewer and guest editor of multiple journals including IEEE Access, IEEE Sensors, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, ACM TECS, Elsevier RSER, have been member of doctoral committees in different Flemish and international univerities, was reviewer for GSA Europe, FWO, Vlaio and the research grant office of Malta.

I am a co-founder of the spin-offs Aloxy, CrowdScan, IoSA, and AtSharp, and have contributed to 1OK and Viloc. In 2025 I was awarded with the Achieved AHA! award by VOKA and the university of Antwerp because of my involvement in those spinoffs. I was also a maker on the Canvas TV program Team Scheire and have an out-of-control passion for brewing beer.

Bringing people together and fostering connections has always been a passion of mine. As a student, I co-founded the Flemish Scholierenkoepel and later served as the chair of the European umbrella organization OBESSU, where I advocated for Human Rights Education and greater student participation in educational policymaking within the Council of Europe. Additionally, I was a founding member and director of the non-profit Dash7 Alliance, dedicated to advancing an international wireless standard.
